What is Sepsis? Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a type of bacteria which commonly infects the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis. It is a ‘hard to treat’ and commonly resistant bug which can be difficult to completely eradicate. This is why those with cystic fibrosis are often given preventative antibiotics administered via an inhaler. This seeks to reduce the number of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the airways even when they don’t have an active infection.
Although pericarditis can be long-lasting, most people recover within weeks. It is very important to continue the whole course of antibiotics even if your child seems remarkably better. This includes vitamins, herbal supplements and over the counter remedies.
What causes a chest infection?
In fact, women are somewhat more prone to catching a chest infection while pregnant. Recurrent pneumonia is defined as two (or usually more) episodes of pneumonia in a lifetime, although the term is often reserved for repeated episodes of pneumonia within 2 years. Each episode will have been at least 1 month apart with an X-ray having visibly confirmed the infection had gone after the previous episode.

It can be difficult distinguishing between ‘persistent’ and ‘recurrent’ pneumonia if there is a lack of serial X-rays. You should rest and drink a lot of water, and you can take painkillers if you are in pain. A doctor can often diagnose pneumonia based on the symptoms and by checking your chest.
How to avoid getting a chest infection
We are the only charity in the world dedicated to researching this issue, supporting patients affected by resistant infections and educating the public on antibiotic resistance. Some of these drugs may have side-effects and you will need to be monitored closely to ensure the antibiotic is working and you do not develop any severe side-effects from the antibiotic. If you’re at an increased risk of chest infections, your GP may recommend being vaccinated against flu and pneumococcal infections (a bacterium that can cause pneumonia). Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help strengthen the immune system, making you less vulnerable to developing chest infections.
Viral pneumonia and COVID-19 pneumonia
If you are pregnant and suspect that you might have a chest infection, you should visit your GP. They will be able to examine you by listening to your lungs and monitoring your oxygen levels. If there is evidence to suggest your chest infection is bacterial, your GP might prescribe you with some suitable antibiotics for pregnancy to help fight your infection. It may take a little longer for your chest infection to clear as changes to your immune system occur during pregnancy.
